Introducing the Delphi Hydrogen Dashboard

28.02.2023 / Lukas Strohmeier
We are happy that we can finally prove the efforts we put into the enhancement of industrial market intelligence services with the launch of our first data product: The Delphi Hydrogen Dashboard.

The underlying poweris a complex database architecture. On the one hand, the developed database structure allows Delphi Data Labs to systematically store & analyze data of hydrogen markets with all their aspects & stakeholders. On the other hand, the dashboard user interface enables us to customize the relevant views to aspecific audience.
Delphi Hydrogen Dashboard
We picked green hydrogen as an excellent first use case for our technology. Our selection is based on the following points:
  • Enormous long-term market potential
  • Currently still manageable market size & complexity
  • Similarity with other industrial technology markets
We analyzed and benchmarked the data offerings of established research providers and came to the conclusion that it is possible to develop a superior market intelligence product for the green hydrogen sector. Our data generation process combines the integration of data from various sources with the elemen tof human knowledge.

The sources include financial databases, AI-powered Webcrawlers, and Newsfeeds. We have been conducting countless interviews with critical stakeholders & insiders in the emerging green hydrogen industry, to constantly improve the quality of our analytics. What makes us especially proud is our considerate approach when it comes to research. We experienced the devastating consequences of decision-making based on low-quality research far too often in our professional careers. We aim to assure the highest research quality in order to prevent our clients to experience such pitfalls. There is no outsourcing of research activities to external services. Furthermore, we do not operate with research teams in low-cost offshore locations.

Unfortunately, buggy and sloppy research is still widespread in the business information industry. Our mission is to bring careful research back to the main agenda. Based on the limitless possibilities offered by modern technology, we are developing affordable market intelligence solutions based on our research excellence.
Content of the Green Hydrogen Module
We constantly track and analyze around 200 OEMs in the electrolysis segment. All the major strategic events, such as funding rounds, market entries, and major project awards or investments (manufacturing, M&A, R&D,..) are tracked. This feature received the most customer interest so far. The two primary use cases for this feature are:
  • Competitive benchmarking for the electrolyzer segment
  • Evaluation of M&A & investment targets
Another key feature is the underlying project database. While project research is not our core competence (currently 2.000–2.500 green hydrogen projects tracked) the information about the involved companies enables us to build up a network of relationships in the hydrogen world. This data is utilized to generate additional value for our clients:
  • We highlight core strategic partnerships, such as R&D collaborations, Joint Ventures, or investments for all our analyzed companies in the hydrogen generation technology space.
  • We are able to attribute several hundred hydrogen projects to the relevant OEMs. Thus, we are able to compare the installed capacities of the vendors in a detailed way.
An underlying data model connects all the dots: The value chain model covers several thousand companies active in the hydrogen space. All companies are attributed to the relevant sections in the value chain. We already demonstrated its value for three different use cases:
  • Identification of relevant M&A targets across the whole value chain
  • Identification of potential suppliers of certain products
  • Identification of potential customers for certain products
Combining the strings — Market forecast algorithm
The quality of long-term forecasts is in general questionable. In the energy space, those forecasts are proven to be extremely inaccurate. Shahan & Mainwood demonstrated theshortcomings of IEA’s long-term renewable energy forecasts.

While we do not assume, that the IEA is manipulating its forecast (the possibility was indicated by the authors), we are convinced that the forecast methodology is to blame. The rapid rate of introducing new innovations to the market, combined with an unparalleled scaling of China’s renewable energy manufacturing supply chains demonstrated the limitations of traditional forecasting methods.

Traditional forecasting models are typically static. In contrast, we are developing a dynamic forecasting model, which is based on millions of datapoints in our ever-growing hydrogen database. As a result, our green hydrogen market forecasts are adjusted several times per year, always updated with the most recent changes in the political, economic and technological environment. Furthermore, we are tracking the performance of our forecast vs. the actual market developments. This enables us to constantly improve forecast accuracy.

Our dynamic market forecasts enable our customers to have a view of the market, that is always up to date. Ultimately, our clients get enabled to make educated decisions faster, compared to their competitors.
The future
At present, we are focusing our development efforts to integrate further technologies. Our research team is currently researching several topics, including the following: fuel cells, turquoise hydrogen technologies, hydrogen derivates (ammonia, methanol, synfuels).
